Using lens hoods: When and why

- In this installment of Photo Gear Weekly, we're going to talk about a little device that I feel like most photographers don't even know exist. Probably the last time they saw this device was when they got a brand-new lens, they assumed it was packing material and they just set it aside. I'm referring to the lens shade, or lens hood. This can be a very valuable device, especially with wide angle lenses when we're photographing outdoors in daylight, but it's very important that you actually use that lens hood if you're going to get the benefit of it. I see many photographers wandering around with no lens hood at all on their wide-angle lenses, or if they do have it attached, it's backwards, serving no purpose other than making it more difficult to get to the focus knob or the zoom knob as applicable for your lens.
