Using the face detection built into the camera

- From my own experience as a shooter, and from watching students in classes, I've come to the conclusion that most people either use the basic automatic focus point selection mode on their camera or they lock their camera on a single point in the center of the frame and then focus and reframe as needed. That's usually the way I work and that's only because of habit. Long ago, that's how auto-focus systems worked best so that's what I got used to, so I still work that way. There's nothing wrong with working that way but advanced auto-focus systems are now very good at solving a lot of complex focusing problems. Face and eye detection are great examples of advanced focusing systems that can be a fantastic improvement over simple single-point auto-focusing. Here's an image I shot with a 50 millimeter lens at F1.2, depth of field was so shallow that it wasn't possible to keep both eyes in focus. I aimed for the close eye, but…
