Using a color checker for accurate color

- As photographers, of course, sometimes we like to exercise a little bit of creative control over the color in our images but in some situations it's very important to have truly accurate color. In other words, we want to essentially neutralize the color element of the light that's illuminating our subject. In a previous episode, we talked about using a gray card for a custom in-camera white balance setting but there's another option that can actually give you even more accurate color. And that involves using a series of color swatches such as the color swatches you see here in the ColorChecker Passport from X-Rite. Now that does include a gray card built right into the product so you can still use that for a custom white balance in-camera if you'd like. But with all of these color swatches, instead of just neutralizing gray, we can make all of these color swatches appear accurate, which means the various colors in our scene will appear accurate as well.
