- Very often, the key to improving a composition is to reduce clutter in the background. And very often, the easiest way to reduce clutter and frame your shot tighter is to move closer to your subject. However, very often, it's not possible to move closer to your subject and so your best option is to switch to a lens with a longer focal length. But, very often, you don't have a lens with a long enough focal length. It might even be that a lens with a long enough focal length is not made for your camera. For these times, you might consider a teleconverter. A teleconverter, sometimes known as a tele-extender, is basically a magnifying glass that you put between your camera and your lens. A teleconverter can turn a long lens into an effectively longer lens, but they do so at a price. Teleconverters are rated by the multiplication factor that they add to the lens' focal length.
