- I'm sitting here now with Jim Hyde. Jim, in a previous episode, action-packed episode with The Practicing Photographer, we looked at a personal project you've got going on where you're scanning lots of fascinating old family photos, adding metadata. In that episode, we looked at the metadata and how it gives you this cool sifting, sorting, living, breathing photo-archive thing. We didn't talk about the scanning, which is actually a fairly critical part of this whole process. - It's an essential first step, yes. - So, what are you scanning on? You've got a simple flatbed scanner. - I'm using a somewhat elderly Epson Perfection 4990 scanner, When I started this project, my wallet was kind of saying you really ought to buy a new high-end scanner, but I decided not to, because these are old photos that don't have the kind of dynamic range that would really benefit from a brand-new high-end scanner. - Some of these are…
