- [Instructor] When you move from one house or apartment to another, one of the first things that you do is you box everything up and you throw away the things that you don't need so that you can make sure that you're moving or bringing over everything that's important and doing so in an orderly way. In the same way, that's what we need to do here. We need to fix up or prep our Lightroom Classic catalog before we migrate over to Lightroom CC. All right, well, what you can see is that I have my catalog and I have some photos in it. These photos are located here on my desktop.
I have this main folder, which is CO-PHOTO and one of the things that I've noticed is that I have this one folder which is outside of my main folder. I want to move that into 2017. So I'm just going to drag that over and drop that there. Lightroom will tell me hey, I'm moving files. Well, that's exactly what I want to do. And basically, what I want you to do is just to make sure that you have everything in a neat and tidy place. Here are my photos, CO-PHOTO. I then have those organized by year or however you organize them.
So the first place that you want to look is to go to your folders. Next you want to go to Collections. The collections are a way that you can organize images together and here you can see I have different collections. One of them is called Shoots for 2017, and if I go into that, you can see that there are some different ways that I've named these. Here's one of a ceiling painter, another one, and really, these names don't make a lot of sense, so I kind of made a mistake there. So if you right-click or control + click, you can name these something new.
So her name is Colette, so I'll just call this one Colette-1 and then I'll go here, right-click or control + click and then name that Colette-2, and the whole point is you just want to make sure that any naming convention makes sense and you're just cleaning house, right? So I'm just going to give that a capital E and then I'll go through and just do this a couple more times. Let me close this up right now so that it doesn't keep bouncing around there. And you really want to take some time. You want to pause. You want to go through everything as good as you can And the rest of these, at least for my organizational system, work.
I know what all of these are, I know where they're located, etc. etc. So once you have done all of that and you've made sure that your folders are in order and your collections are in order, the last thing that you want to do is take a look at where your catalog actually is and what it's called. So if you go to the Lightroom pulldown menu and then find Catalog Settings, what you can then do is go to this area where you can show the location of your catalog. This will be different if you're an a Mac or PC but either way, it will take you to that spot.
Here I'm on a Mac, so it's a Pictures folder, and we can see that my catalog is called Lightroom Catalog. So again, you just want to make sure that okay, that's the name of my catalog. That's the one that I'm working with. I now know where everything is. Everything's nice and organized, and now we are ready to migrate over to Lightroom CC.
