Light modifiers

- Whether you're using a studio strobe or a speedlight, there are a lot of different tools you can use to modify the light coming out of your flash. And remember, we modify it usually so that it's softer and more flattering on our subjects. We've got umbrellas. You've seen things like this at the photo studio at the department store. This is a black umbrella with a silver lining. And you shine a light up into it, and it reflects back out onto your subject. I don't like these. They're a little too, crunchy is the word that the people in the industry use. They're more specular. They have shiny spots in this silver umbrella, and it ends up giving more highlights on the skin. I don't really like that. I much prefer a white umbrella. And with the white umbrella, I'm not shooting into it and then reflecting back towards my subject here. I'm shooting through it, as you'll see us doing later, and using it to illuminate my subject through the umbrella. And it's a very soft light, and it's…
