- I wish you could just go to the store and buy a great tripod right off the shelf. Unfortunately, you need to know some things before you get your tripod. A lot of people don't like using tripods for pictures and that's usually because they've got the wrong kind of tripod for what they're trying to do. Often if you go to a department store and buy a tripod, you're going to get something like this. It's got a wand on it and it tips easily forward and backward and it probably pans, but it doesn't allow you to shoot vertically and it doesn't allow you to level it without leveling the entire base as well. This kind of a tripod is really made for video work and the tripods I've seen at department stores are typically more suitable for video work. You'll know you're getting a good tripod if you can separate the head from the sticks.
