Easing into manual mode

- Exposure is at the foundation of photography, of course. Now I find that many photographers are intimidated by exposure, in general, and intimidated even more so by manual exposure mode. In a previous episode, I talked about some of the situations some of the reasons why you might want to use manual exposure mode, at least from time to time, but how do you make that transition if you don't feel very confident in your ability to essentially achieve a good exposure in manual exposure mode? Well, you can take, essentially, a two-step process. Use any method that works well for you to get a good exposure. That might be a fully automatic mode or a semiautomatic mode. And then once you've established good exposure settings for the scene, then you can dial those settings in using the manual exposure mode. And by taking this approach, you'll start to get more confident in your ability to figure out how to interpret the meter reading in your camera, for example, and how to get a good…
