Join Justin Reznick for an in-depth discussion in this video Challenge 2: Use a filter to make a creative shot, part of 5-Day Photo Challenge: Landscapes.
- Welcome to today's challenge. We're still at the iconic location and I still have the iconic composition. But we're gonna do something different, we're gonna try and differentiate ourselves from the standard shot through the use of filters. Today we're gonna use a neutral density filter and that's your challenge. Now, neutral density filters come in different stops. I have with me a 3-stop, a 5-stop and a 10-stop and we wanna use those to experiment to get different shutter speeds and those different shutter speeds are gonna give us different effects.
Now, for this iconic location we have water and clouds, both excellent subjects that work really well with long exposures. We also have a little bit more freedom to shoot outside the golden hour because long exposures can be very pleasing during the day. So remember, the challenge is not to change your composition or even your lens, just to keep everything the way it was, but add neutral density filters to see what long exposures are all about and often you'll find very unique images come from it. Just to give you an idea here are a few examples from my portfolio.
Now it's time to create your own.
