- As cameras gain the ability to capture more pixels, to shoot higher quality video, and to move all of that image and video data around more quickly, media card manufacturers create new card specs that allow for higher capacities and faster data transfer. In my experience though, media cards last a long time. I mean, except for when you lose them but I can't really blame that on the technology. If you've been shooting for awhile then, you probably have a good stock of cards but if you upgrade your camera, you might find yourself reading about faster card specs. Does that mean that you need to replace all of your current cards with newer, faster, possibly expensive cards? Not necessarily. For everyday still shooting, your old cards will probably work just fine in a newer camera unless they're very old technology. For still shooting, where you'll feel hobbled by older technology cards is when you shoot bursts of images. Once your camera's buffer fills up, you won't be able to shoot…
