- A lot of things go into the making of a good photograph, and here at The Practicing Photographer we've talked about most of those things. You need a good technical understanding of exposure theory, you need a lot of practical understanding of your specific camera, you need a good aesthetic for composition. But there's another component that you often need that not a lot of photographers talk about, and that's luck. Very often you get a good photo because you get lucky, and maybe we don't talk about that because we don't want to admit that that's often what makes a good photograph. But consider this image, I shot this in Death Valley. And Death Valley is called Death Valley because it so rarely rains there, but I happened to get there on an afternoon when a huge thunderstorm was rolling through and breaking up, and I could not shoot fast enough.
