- The willow tree at Lake Wanaka was, perhaps, the best infrared scene I've come across yet. The direct sun hitting the tree, the sky, the lake, remember water is really important, and the clouds, it had everything. So I had an absolute blast doing that, and I want to share with you an infrared image and talk about some processing. So this image here is not quite black and white. So let me explain what's going on here. When I was in the field, the white balance you choose will very much influence what the image is going to look like. And what I recommend doing when you're shooting infrared like I do, in the 850 nanometer range, is you find a custom white balance off green. So you point your camera at grass or a tree that has green leaves and do a custom white balance, and that brings you very close to black and white, so that when I'm in the field and I'm reviewing the images, they look like this.
