Join Justin Reznick for an in-depth discussion in this video Challenge 1: Shoot an iconic shot at golden hour, part of 5-Day Photo Challenge: Landscapes.
- This is going to be our very first challenge. Now I want to tell you about how this is going to work. Each day, I'm going to set you up with a challenge. I'm going to set you to it. I want you to go and give yourself that chance to experiment and grow by following that challenge. And then I'm going to follow up with the solution. Basically, take my own lesson, my own challenge, apply it to this location. So let's go right into day one. We are at Lake Matheson.
This place is so iconic. It's so beautiful. It's gorgeous. I'm on a platform, and there's more than just me here. This is an iconic location. So, here's your first challenge. I want you to pick an iconic location, or a location you like to photograph, and I want you to go with a wide angle lens, and your camera, polarizer, so I want you to see if the polarization helps, and I want you to create a very technically proficient beautiful image. Kind of what you're used to. Just landscape 101.
I want you think about an aperture that gives you maximum depth of field. Somewhere f11 to f16. And I want you to study some images online. If you find yourself in an iconic location that's been photographed, study some images. What I want you to do is recreate your version of that iconic image. It's not about being original here. It's about being able to recreate something beautiful. You know, there are some photographers that say stay away from icons, and I don't agree with that. I think icons are there for a reason. And I want you to go and experience them from yourself.
And we're going to learn from that experience and grow. So that's challenge one. Now the golden hour for me has passed. That's going to be the time where sunrise and sunset, you get that brilliant color, pinks, and oranges, and yellows. We're approaching twilight here, but I was able to get that image in my challenge, and you'll see that in the solution, in the golden hour. So you guys focus on that golden hour. That's the light I want you to shoot it in. All right, get to the challenge and I'll see you on the solution.
