The power of negative space

A somewhat unconventional, yet really intriguing way to shoot photos of your crafts, is by using what's called negative space. And negative space is when the background of an image really helps define the foreground of the image. So, in the example on your screen right now, we have a picture of a pop up card that I made for Valentine's Day, and I used a very light paper, it has just a very subtle texture on it. But I really wanted to show the motion of the card, so I shot it against a very dark background. And by doing that, I created a contrast in light. And this contrast in light, while I didn't notice it right away. When I was shooting the image as soon as I downloaded it to my computer, I noticed that my eye kept traveling around the line of this card. And I noticed more and more that this background, this really dark background was providing a tremendous presence within the image.
