Getting around, getting cell service, and getting money
With some of the densest population numbers on earth, Hong Kong could easily have been a transportation nightmare. Fortunatley, they have it all figured out and public transport is very easy to use, even for first time visitors. Also, it's cheap, which is always nice. Nathan Road is the main north south artery in Hong Kong and the subway, which is locally known the the MTR, runs right up and down that road. This makes getting around super easy for tourists. We never once took a taxi in the city, except for traveling to or from the airport. It was all MTR and walking. The MTR system uses a stored value system called an octopus card, and if you're staying for more than just one or two days, it makes sense to get one. You can buy tickets in cash every time, but it is both slower and more expensive. It's a better deal to get the card. As a bonus, the octopus card also works as a no fee debit card at many locations, making it more economical and faster than constantly hitting the ATM up…
