- The Luxembourg Gardens are about a half mile southwest of Notre Dame Cathedral. They're absolutely beautiful, but the thing to think about when you're walking into this place, is that this used to be someone's backyard. They were built for Marie De'Medici, the widow of Henry IV, in the early 1600s. Today, they're the second largest park in Paris, and a great place to take an afternoon break from sightseeing. The centerpiece of the gardens is a large pool in front of Luxembourg Palace, which today houses the French Senate. Basically the pool is a kid magnet, and if you're traveling with kids, they'll find it a great place to spend an hour or so in the afternoon. This pool is not for swimming, but as far as kids are concerned, there's something that may be a little better. You can reasonably rent a wooden pond yacht, and sail it all over the pool and around the fountain. With the palace in the background, it's a storybook way to spend an afternoon break.
