Determining available light

Whenever you shoot time lapse, it's important to know where the light's going to be, and when. And with a motion time lapse, that's even more tricky. It's not enough to just design a shot that looks good and to let the sun go down, or the moon come up, or a sunrise. Rather, you need to think about where the sun is going to be throughout your shot. For me, I travel so much, I often get disoriented and even though I actually did earn my orienteering merit badge, I sometimes get a little bit confused where the light's going to be. So, I turn towards technology. One of my favorite apps is called Sun Seeker, but there's lots of other ones out there. And with a quick push of a button, I could see everything about my particular location. For example, right here I can tell that twilight is going to start around 7:30 at night. It's a little bit before that now, but we're getting ready to start shooting at night and that's going to let me start to see the darkness really kick in and the lights…
