Creating a panning time lapse on a budget
Let's take a look at the Syrp Genie. This is one type of panning head and there's a lot on the market. What I like about this one is it's very easy to use. Essentially you connect the camera to the head and the head to your tripod. Let's build this from the ground up. The first step was to get my tripod solid and I've got a bubble level here and I've already made sure my tripod was level. Having a level tripod just makes things look that much better in your time-lapse movie. What you don't want is your time lapse to really start to lean as you're recording. Now of course with the pan there will be a little bit of changing of the axis because your not moving on a slider here, you're panning. So your horizon line is going to rock a little bit from one side to the other, but that's okay. We could fix that with key framing in post or you could just leave it as part of the shot.
