- When we make decisions about money, how to spend it, what we do to earn it, how we put it aside and grow it for the future, we're dealing with a lot more than just numbers. Money is woven into the most intimate aspects of our lives. It's part of who we are, how we take care of ourselves, and how we connect with others. Money can also be a physical experience, with certain financial events lighting up our brains like a pinball machine. Hi, I'm Amanda Clayman. Helping people take control of their financial health is my passion.
But that wasn't always the case. 15 or so years ago, I came to an important crossroads in my life. In many ways, my life at that time was pretty great. I was living by myself in a big new city I had friends and was building a career in marketing that I loved. But, I had a secret. Even though I made a decent income, it never seemed to be enough. I paid bills late, bounced checks, I even had my utilities cut off. And the credit card debt, ugh, the credit card debt kept me up at night.
I was so ashamed of this chaos that it made any other success I achieved feel like I was living a lie. The process of turning my financial life around was a surprisingly personal journey. I did pay off almost $20,000 in credit card debt and learned how to live on a budget, but more importantly, I learned to understand and manage my more destructive financial impulses. I decided I wanted to help others do the same. So I went back to graduate school and entered the emerging field of financial therapy. In this course, I'll introduce you to the concept of financial wellness.
A way of balancing the cognitive, emotional, physical and interpersonal aspects of money, to bring our goals and behavior into alignment. The practice of managing personal cash flow is the foundation of financial wellness. I've organized the work into three sections. In the first, we'll explore the factors that impact how we think about and use money. In section two, we'll prepare and organize ourselves for financial change. And in the third section, I'll take you step-by-step through the creation and implementation of your new cash flow plan.
Welcome, let's begin.
