Working from a still life in a home or studio

Still life, as a painting genre, has a long history reaching back to the late 16th century. Back in the days of long drying oil paint, the still life was a particularly attractive subject to artists. A still life arrangement could be set up and remain unchanged for as long as needed. The popularity of still life continues to this day, and it's an easy to set up subject for digital painting. One important thing to think about is how to choose objects that have meaning to you or act as a metaphor. By using objects of this type, you can create an image with internal meaning. For example, I've selected this vase as the main subject and the star of the show. And it has meaning to me because it's a nod to many of the still life paintings that I've used as interpretation over the years. The other objects in this scene are supporting actors. They have smaller shapes, taking advantage of the idea of repetition, which is always a good thing. The final element is the lighting. This is important…
