What it means to express a gradient

- [Speaker] In this chapter, we'll use the express gradient command to creatively modify a photo's luminance values. Our subject will be Morro Bay and it's famous rock, which is actually a volcanic plug. Gradients are generally associated with graduations of selected colors that fill an area of the canvas. For example, a gradient of cyan to blue is often used to represent clear daylight sky. Gradients can be complex, utilizing many colors for a variety of effects. As another example, a rainbow is a gradient of the colors of the visible spectrum. Another way to utilize a gradient is to map it's color range to luminance values of an image. Said another way, we are replacing the dark to light values of an image with the linear color range of a selected gradient. This swapping of luminance for color range enables a visually unique method to modify an image. Let's take a couple minutes to find out just what express gradient in an image actually does.
