Using a photo to capture and edit a still life

There are times when the perfect still life is either temporary or in a location that isn't amenable to digital painting. In these cases, you have the option of bringing the still life home via photography. Practically everyone has a camera in his pocket in the form of a smartphone. Take advantage of this valuable tool to bring still life subject into your studio that you can then paint en plein air. Now, this is the photo that I took for this course, and it is a highly set up shot. But let's just imagine that this is in a antique store somewhere, and, you know, I've asked, is it okay if I shoot this. They say, okay. So I'm looking at this. And one of the things that I've learned to do is, when I'm going to set up a shot and go ahead and photograph it, I always make sure that I frame it with a bit of extra space around it.
