- Our starting point is not one, but two basic paragraphs. Every program has a set of defaults, which means the way it sets things when you haven't told it to do something else. This'll vary from program to program, but it pretty much looks like this. This text is set in Times Roman, 10 point type, on 12 point line spacing, and aligned to the left. It looks fine at a glance. It's readable, the data is here, but that's all. It's not attractive, and it's not as clear as it seems. And where it gets tripped up is in its details, which is where text almost always gets tripped up, and there are a lot of details. We're going to change all of these things. First step, though, is to choose a more reader-friendly typeface. Times Roman is a common default, but it's not great. It's somewhat condensed. It's a little bit heavy.
