Two-page book grid

- If you're working on a two-page spread like a book, as a rule you're gonna want wider outside bottom margins, partly for the hand hold, partly for those folios, and partly so the outside margins look balanced with the gutter between the pages. Here's a simple formula for you. It's not the only way to do it, but it's easy to remember and it always works. Draw two diagonal lines from the top center to the lower outside corners. Create text blocks that are the same proportions as the page, and align the corners along the diagonals like this. Let's turn this into text. Remove the guides, add the folios, and there you go. If you need more white, just reduce the size of the blocks, keeping the proportions the same. Then you can adjust the margins just by sliding the blocks along the diagonals. In this case, we have a really wide bottom margin, which allows us to accommodate footnotes. This works regardless of your proportions. Here's a narrower page.
