- A grid is a simple thing. It's one or more horizontal or vertical guides that help you keep things organized in a line. At its most basic, you have a page, you have one column, you have margins. How wide the margins are depends on what you're doing. First a side note. In this course, I'm gonna be setting all the text in Adobe Minion. This is for convenience as much as anything. Typography of course is always a part of your design, and often a big part, but this course is about layout, so I wanna keep the type differences to a minimum. Minion is an excellent text face. Medium build, sits very cleanly on the page, fits very well. And it's a large family of type, several weights of bold and bold italics, old-style numerals, small caps, even condensed and display versions. The benefit of a big family like this is that you have consistency, because it is all one family, and at the same time, you can create difference in contrast. Text in a column is all about line length and readability.…
