Keep it simple

- Every layout is different, literally from every other. Different words, different images, different format, different purpose. Things interact on the page in unpredictable ways and so on. All these variables affect what you do, so it's like, how do you get through those? There's no set way. There's no fixed path. There are though, some universals that apply very broadly to all layout. I will always have these in mind as I'm working. They're like a compass for me. I may not know how to get there, but I know that it's that way. And if I at least know that, I'll know not to go there. For example, probably my over-arching rule of layout is to keep things simple. The more stuff you put on your page, the harder it is to design. Look for what you can subtract rather than add. Fewer elements, simpler elements. Use as little as possible and make everything work hard. This starts with words. It's fun to talk, but cut to the chase. Three words are easier to remember than 10.
