- There are two prime components of a good presentation: data and story. The best presentation will always have both. Think of it as show and tell. Data are facts and figures. Sales are up 16%. We moved 589,000 packages in Q1. The fire burned 120 acres. Data is what goes into charts and graphs and reports. Story is what gives data meaning. Do we care really that this storm is the third wettest since November? What we care about is that we're wet, or the dog's tracking in muddy footprints, or that our drought is ending. Story is personal. Story is how we share with one another our hopes, our dreams, our ideas, our projects, our loves, our experiences. Story has feeling, it has emotion, it's how we connect. To present well, you almost must present your data in the context of story. Frame it in a way that means something to us. Data is not what matters. It's the meaning of the data that matters.
