The rest of this course is devoted to using PHP to export data to formats used by fully featured word processing programs. There are two main formats, files with an odt file name extension and files with a docx extension. Both are based on the open document format. This is an international standard approved by the ISO. The International Organization for Standardization. The content of both odt and docx files is stored internally in XML documents. Although the structure of odt and docx files is markedly different, the fact that all the main information is stored as XML means that files created on one program can normally be read on another. In fact, odt and docx files are basically wrappers for XML and other files bundled together as a compressed zip archive. odt files are created natively by open source word processes such Apache OpenOffice Writer and LibreOffice Writer.
