- Normal template or normal.dotm is the most important…of all the templates in Microsoft Word.…It's a global template that serves as the basis…of most of the documents that we create.…But more importantly for our purposes,…normal is where we save all kinds of settings.…All different types of user customizations.…And the more you tweak Word to work…in a particular fashion, the more content…you're putting into your normal template.…For example, you'll find that changes that you make…to any of the built in styles are in normal.dotm…so if you modify heading one, that's where it gets saved.…
Any new styles that you create,…they're in normal.dotm as well.…And default settings, if you change your font,…if you choose a particular spacing set,…if you change to a different page design,…if you decide that your normative orientation…is going to be landscape rather than portrait.…All of this and more is saved in the normal.dotm template.…Any macros you write unless you put them…in a particular document or a particular template…
