- If you're planning to buy and install Microsoft Word or any of the other Office applications, the most common way to do that is through an Office 365 Membership. Office 365 is a subscription service and the main feature of that service, is that you can download and install Microsoft Office which, of course, includes Microsoft Word. Let's take a quick look at our options for setting up a 365 account, and installing Word. And I want to start on this web page, products.office.com.
This is where you can go for information about an Office 365 account, and this is also where you go to purchase the account when you're ready. Now there are options here For home and For business, so you just want to click on whichever one of these applies to you. So for example, I'm going to click on home and then we can see the different types of Office 365 accounts. For $9.99 a month, you can set up an Office 365 Home account which will allow you to download and install Microsoft Office on up to five computers.
But if you know that you're only going to install Office on one, single computer, you can save a little bit of money. The Office 365 Personal account is only $6.99 a month, and will give you a license to install Office on one computer. Or if you just want to do a one-time purchase of Office and you don't want the monthly membership, you can get the Office Home & Student edition that's going to give you one install for one computer for $139.99. And of course, if we take a step back and we go over to For business, you've got some other options for setting up your account.
Either way, once you decide which account you want, you're going to go to that page and you'll need to choose Buy now and set up the account. When you set up the account, you'll set up an email address and a password that you'll use to log in to Office 365. But if you already have some sort of Microsoft online account, maybe an Outlook email address, you can use the login that you have for that account for your Office 365 membership. Either way, once you've set up your account and you're ready to install Microsoft Office, you'll come back to this page and you'll just go to the top right where it says, Sign in.
So I'm going to click there and I'm going to For home, and then I'm going to log in, and I'll hit Sign In. From here, there's a bunch of information about your Office 365 account, but we're really interested in this Install option, so I'll click on this. So I have Office 365 Home which means I can install Office on five computers, and I can use the mobile app on up to five devices. Now you can see that I've already installed Office on three computers, which means I can install it on two more, including this one.
So to install Office on this computer, I'm going to hit the Install button, here. And it's going to start downloading the Install tool. I can click on my Download Manager and I can see how long that's going to take. Once the download is finished, you can go to your Downloads folder to run it. Usually your web browser will have some shortcut to your Downloads folder, or else you can go to Finder, then go to your Downloads folder, and I've got that right here. You can just double-click on it and go through the standard installation process.
When you're done, you should make sure to launch Microsoft Word or one of the other Office applications. If it asks you to activate your installation, you can do that. You'll just need to type in the email address and password for your Office 365 account, to complete that activation. Once you've done that, Office will be all set up and ready to go, including Microsoft Word. If you want, you can always come back to this page, and you can keep track of how many computers you've installed Office on. You'll have that same option to install on up to five computers, if you have the Office 365 Home account.
But the personal account will only let you install on one computer, and the other versions of the 365 account will work differently as well. If you want, you can come here and Deactivate the Install on any of your computers, to free up that license for another computer. And with that, you should be able to get Office, which includes Microsoft Word, installed and running on your computer. Then you should be all ready to dive into this course.
