- Let's go over how to navigate Microsoft Outlook so that you'll be more familiar with it while we're going through this course. At the very top of the screen is the "File" menu. This contains menu options that are also located on the ribbon tool bar, which is right below it. The ribbon tool bar is a tab interface that gives you all sorts of tools and options while you're going through each module in Outlook. The ribbon will change according to where you are. Such as the "Mail," "Calendar," "Contacts," etc.
On the right-hand side is the search bar. You can click and enter your query and you can also get some more advanced options and we'll be talking about that in a later video. Directly underneath that is a little triangle and you can click on this triangle to collapse the ribbon. This is useful if it's too much visual clutter or if you need a little bit more screen area to work with. While it's collapsed, the ribbon still works. I can click on any option and activate it that way. To put the ribbon back permanently, click on the arrow again on the right-hand side.
Let's move all the way down to the bottom left-hand side of the screen. The status bar tells you how many items are in the current folder that you're in. All the way to the right-hand side on the status bar it will tell you what server you are currently connected to and the last time it synced. This is useful at finding out if there are any server or connection issues that you might be having. Immediately above that on the left-hand side is the task switcher. This is how you get back and forth between your mail, your calendar, contacts, tasks and notes.
You can actually collapse this by moving all the way to the right-hand side and clicking the triangle. This is useful again if you need a little bit more screen area. I'm going to click to expand it for the rest of the course, however. Directly above that is the navigation bar. This is where you can move back and forth between any email accounts that you have and any folders within that email account. In the middle is the summary view of all your mail in your inbox. You can click on a particular email and read it on the right-hand side.
I'm going to click on "Calendar." Your calendar works the same way. Here's the ribbon tab and you'll notice that all the options are entirely different. You can see the main part of your calendar in the middle. And on the left-hand side is the navigation bar where you can choose a different date to get to. I'll click "People" this time. Again, there's another ribbon tab. You can have different contact folders. I can click on a particular contact and see the details of that contact on the right-hand side.
There's also "Tasks" and "Notes," which I won't be going through in this course but I do cover in great detail in my Outlook for Mac 2016 Essential Training course. I'm going to click back on the "Mail" tab. Up next, I'm going to show you how to go through and read your mail.
