In this lesson, learn how to troubleshoot applications that will not start, including by launching the applications in safe mode and removing add-ins.
- [Instructor] There will be times when an application will fail to start. Or will throw an error. In these cases, your first line of defense is to ensure that both Windows and Office are up to date. Your next step is then to run the application in Safe Mode. And that's what I'm going to demonstrate here. There are two ways to launch an application in Safe Mode. You can either hold down the Control key while launching the application. Or you can use the Run Command. And that's what I'm going to do. Next, you'll go ahead and enter the name of the application slash save. One of the exceptions to this rule happens to be with Word.
You'll notice here that I'm actually using winword slash save. I'm going to go ahead and click Okay. You may be prompted to accept the agreement, go ahead and click Accept. You'll notice when we're running in Safe Mode this looks pretty bare bones. And the reason for that is that templates have not been loaded and add ins have not been loaded. This means that you can remove your add ins safely if they've been causing you a problem. We're going to go ahead and remove one of the add ins. To do so, I first need a blank document.
Click on File. New. Blank. And next, we'll find the add ins in the Insert tab of the ribbon. Click in add ins. Manage other add ins. I'm going to go ahead and remove the Microsoft Action Pane three but in order to do so I must load the Action Pane Schema. Click Go. I go ahead and select the Action Pane Schema for the add ins. Then my XML action packs. Select the action pack that I would like to remove.
And then click Delete. Am I sure I really want to do this? Yes I am. Now I can go ahead and close Word. I don't want to save my document. And if that was the add in that was causing me the problem, Word should now start normally. The last step in troubleshooting a startup of an application is to ensure that you've updated any outdated drivers. To update drivers go to Device Manager. Go ahead and select your device that might be out of date.
I'm just going to go ahead and select Mouse Driver just for our demonstration. You'll go ahead and right click. And then you'll update the driver software. What will happen now is Windows will go out and try to find the updated driver for you. If it cannot find an updated driver then you may have to refer to the manufacturers website. Following these troubleshooting techniques should help you get your applications back up and running and your users back to being productive.
