- If you're planning to buy and install Microsoft Word, or any of the other Office applications, the most common way to do that is through an Office 365 membership. Office 365 is a subscription service, and the main feature of that service is that you can download and install the Office applications, including Microsoft Word. So let's take a quick look at our options for setting up a 365 account and installing Office. Now I want to start on this page: products.office.com This is where you can go for information about an Office 365 account, and you can purchase the account when you're ready.
There are two big buttons here on this page, one for Home and one for Business. So you should click on whichever option is right for you and then you can take a look at the different Office 365 plans and you can sign up for those accounts. So for $9.99 a month, you can use Office 365 Home, which will allow you to install Office on up to five computers and five mobile devices. If you know that you only want to install Office on one computer, you can save a little money with the Office 365 Personal account for only $6.99 a month.
Or if you want to do just a single, one time purchase of one license of Microsoft Office, you can do the Home & Student version for $139.99, and then you don't have to pay the monthly membership. Now, if you're not a home user, if you're a business user, you can go back to that main page. You can click on For business and you can look at the other accounts. Whichever way you go, once you decide which account you want, just go ahead and go to this page and hit Buy now on whichever option you want, go through the process and set up the account, and of course you'll need a credit card to pay for it.
When you set up your account, you'll need to set an email address and password, which you'll use to log in to your Office 365 account. If you already have some Microsoft online account, maybe an Outlook email address, you can use the email address and password for that account to log into Office 365 as well. Either way, once you've set up the account and you're ready to install Office, you'll need to come back to this page, you'll click on the Sign In option up in the top right. You'll choose For home or for work.
I'm going to choose the For home option because that's the type of account I have. Then, you'll type in your email address and password and hit Sign In. So this page will give you a bunch of information about your Office 365 account, but what we're really interested in here is the Install option. So I'm going to click on that. Now, I have Office 365 Home, which allows me to install Office on up to five computers. And you can see, I've already installed Office on three computers. I have all three of those listed here.
When you're ready to install on a new computer, just log in to this page on the computer that you want to install on, and then you'll hit this Install button here. So what's going to happen from here is it's going to download the installation file for Microsoft Office. Then, you'll need to go to your Downloads folder. Now, most browsers will have some link here to go to your Downloads folder, or you can go into the File Explorer and go to your Downloads folder here, and from here you'll just double-click on the installation file and go through the install process.
When you're finished with the installation process, you should make sure to launch Microsoft Word or one of the other Office applications. And if it asks you to activate your installation, you can do that, you'll just need to type in the email address and password for your Office 365 account to complete the activation. Once you've done that, Office will be all set up and ready to go, including Microsoft Word. If you want, you can always come back to your Account page here. Let me close these other windows. And here on the Account page, you can keep track of how many computers you've installed Microsoft Office on.
You'll have that same option to install on up to five computers if you have the Office 365 Home account. The Personal account will only let you install on one computer, and the other versions of the 365 account will all work differently. But if you want, you can come here and deactivate Office on any of your current installs, which will free up a license that you can use on another computer. With that, you should be able to get Office installed, which of course includes Microsoft Word. Then, you should be all ready to dive into this course.
