The Grade node

The Grade node

Nuke has both a Grade Node and a Color Correct Node, which have very different purposes. The Grade Node, which we'll look at here, is specifically designed to do a preliminary grade on a plate to correct for over or under exposure, for example. The Color Correct mode on the other hand, is optimized for color correcting a compositing layer to match the background. I'll double-click on the Grade Node to open up the Property panel in the Property bin. Let's start by looking at the black point here. The black point means whatever number appears in this window is pulled to zero. Now of course, you can dial it in or type it in. But very often you'll want to sample it in. So I'll turn on the Sampler. I'll zoom into my window. I'll use the viewer gamma to find a nice dark spot here. So let's say this is going to be the area I want to be my black point. I'm going to sample this region with a rectangle, but I'm also going to hold down the Alt key, so that I get the input, otherwise I'll be…
