The ice beach
- As the icebergs and the smaller pieces of ice leave the glacial lagoon and flow out through the short channel that connects to the sea, they will often run aground and become temporary islands that the rushing outflow of tidal water flows past. Sometimes they'll rock back and forth a bit as the tide slowly nudges them along. While larger pieces remain fixed in place for a time until gradual melting and erosion from the sea water causes them to float free and then be carried closer to the beach. The ice is gradually carried into the surf line where it's tossed about in the waves or carried up onto the beach to become part of a temporary ice sculpture garden on the black volcanic sands. Sometimes there's a lot of ice on the beach, and at other times, hardly any ice at all. You never know what the conditions will be like.
