(peaceful rapids murmer) - During one of my landscape workshops, one of the participants was gazing out the window of the truck as we traveled across the country. And, she remarked to me that she never expected to see so much water in Iceland. And, it is very true, that there is a lot of water in Iceland. In addition to the ocean, which surrounds the island, rivers and lakes are quite numerous, and they cover about 6% of the total land area. In a study done in 2010, Iceland was named as the country the most abundant and secure supply of fresh water in the entire world. A significant amount of the country's freshwater resources are in the form of the many glaciers and icecaps, including Vatnajökull, the largest ice cap in Europe. In addition to rain and snow, the regular melting of this ice is what feeds the many rivers and lakes.
