Glacier Lagoon
- In the Southeast are two of the most popular destinations in Iceland for photographers and regular tourists alike. These are the Glacial Lagoon at Jökulsárlón, as well as the nearby shoreline, often referred to as the Ice Beach, where ice from the lagoon eventually flows to wash up on the black sand beach. The Glacial Lagoon was created as one of the glaciers of the Vatnajökull Ice Cap gradually retreated over the years. It is the deepest lake in Iceland, and as the glacier has retreated, its size has increased fourfold in the past 40 years. The edge of the glacier extends out over the water of the lake, where large pieces of ice break off to become icebergs that float in the lagoon. If the glacier continues retreating at its current pace, it is expected that there will come a day in the not-so-distant future, when it no longer extends over the water in the lake, and thus the ice will no longer break off to float in the lagoon.
