- ARP is a fantastic tool for getting Mac addresses…when you only have an IP Address.…But ARP starts to fall apart a little bit…when we start adding routers…and internet connections to our network.…If you take a look at my little network here,…you'll notice I've got my four computers…but now I've added a router,…and the router's a part of my broadcast domain.…One of his connections connects…right into the switch on my network…so he's got an IP Address…that's part of this network as well.…Now if this computer over here wants to send data…he's got a problem.…
The challenges is that he need to know…whether it's a local call…so he can just do a regular ARP…to one of the individual computers on his network.…Or if it's to be set outside of the network,…in that case it has to talk through the router…and send it out to the internet.…To take care of that, we have a number of settings…that you have to add to your computer…so that you can get on to a TCP/IP network.…Now obviously each one of these…has to have an IP address, that's a given…
