- Now this is a fairly serious wireless access point.…This is an older Cisco WAP, it's a few years old.…Thing's been on my wall here in the office for so long,…I've pretty much almost forgotten about it.…Which is kind of good because the thing runs like a tank.…Anyway, what's kind of cool about this,…you'll notice that there's a blue RJ45 cable here,…but there's no power connection.…Now, there are plugs for power on here,…but there's nothing plugged into it.…Yet, obviously, this WAP is running just fine.…This is done because of something called Power Over Ethernet…Power Over Ethernet simply means that we provide…the power neccessary to run, in this case,…a wireless access point, over the Ethernet cable itself.…
POE is fantastic.…In particular, it's really great for wireless access points,…which invariably are put onto walls that are nowhere near,…anywhere close to convenient electricity.…So, to make POE work, well it's actually pretty easy.…First of all, you have to get a wireless access point…that's POE capable.…
