Understanding subnetting
- [Voiceover] Hello and welcome back to another addition of Building Your Technology Skills. My name is Martin Guidry and this week we'll be talking about subnets. A subnet is a logical division of a physical network. One physical network can be divided into multiple subnetworks or more commonly called subnets. Each subnet operates independently. Communication within one subnet requires only a hub or a switch but communication between different subnets will require a router and is typically somewhat slower. To understand subnets we'll have to talk about IP addresses. A typical IP address like 192.168.100.99 actually gives us two pieces of information. The first piece of information is which subnet is this machine on and the second piece of information is which host is this machine on that subnetwork. So if we look at 192.168.100.99 this would typically be interpreted as the first three octets represent the network. So we are on the 192.168.100 network or subnet and this machine…
