- One of the best things about NSX is that you can start off with what you have and leverage that to create your virtual network. So if that's an enterprise environment then you're starting off with your vSphere, with your host and your clusters and your vSphere distributed switches. For the purposes of this training, what we're going to use is VMware's Hands-On Labs so that we'll have something that we can start off with and I can show you how we can build on to it. And a cool thing about that is that I'm going to be demonstrating on it but you can also create yourself an account and get into Hands-On Labs and actually follow along.
So how would you do that? Well, you can go to hol.vmware.com and that'll take you to the main page for VMware's Hands-On Labs. From there you can scroll down to the section that says Labs and click on Launch. When you do that you'll see the labs that are available. And there's lots of labs that are available and they change over time, whatever the hot topic is. Of course, one of the hot topics now is NSX. So there's an NSX Introduction Lab.
If you click on Enroll in that lab, then it'll ask you to log on. Of course, if you haven't registered yet, then you'll click on Register! And then you can put your information in to register. I've already registered, of course, so I'm going to click on Cancel. And then I'm going to go ahead and log on. When you first come into your lab, you'll say you're going to start the lab. Of course, I've already started this. Checked it out so I'm going to say I'm going to resume my lab. You can also suspend and resume your lab as you need to.
Now for the purposes of this training, I'm not going to actually follow VMware's lab. I'm just leveraging that gear, that virtual gear, to do my demonstration. So I'm going to close the manual here. And then I'm going to maximize the desktop. You'll notice that it told me how to log on. It said it was Corp Administrator, right? Corp\Administrator and then capital V, capital M, w-a-r-e, one, bang. So I'm going to double-click on Firefox and I'm going to log on to the Web Client.
The first time you log on to the Client, it may take a minute to do it, as it authenticates. Now in the Web Client are many sections and later, we're going to take a look at networking and security but right now, what I want to do is show you what we're leveraging, what we're starting off with before we even install NSX. And so for that, we're going to look at Hosts and Clusters. So I'm going to double-click on Hosts and Clusters. And you'll see it's going to show me the clusters of hosts that I have to work with.
As you can see, I have a Management and Edge cluster, Compute Cluster A and Compute Cluster B, all with their own associated hosts. You'll see how we'll leverage those to create our virtual environment. But also, we're going to need vSphere distributed switches, at least one, but we actually have two. So I'm going to change my view to Networking and as you can see, we have two vSphere distributed switches that we can work with. And you'll see how we're going to leverage those.
Those are going to be the glue that holds all this together. So those are the raw materials that we're going to be using throughout this course.
VMware Certified Instructor Bill Ferguson covers the basics of NSX (including NSX components) and techniques for creating a software-defined data center. He shows how to configure a controller cluster, prepare hosts for VXLAN networking, and configure logical switches and distributed routers. Later in the course, Bill configures static and OSPF routing, load balancing, and a simple VPN, as well as high availability with NSX Edge. By the end of the training, viewers should be able to use NSX on top of their existing network resources to improve performance, deploy services, and increase security—without any additional hardware.
