Using the exercise files

- Most of this course involves working directly with phpMyAdmin so there are very few exercise files. If you're a subscriber to lynda.com, you have access to these files but, even if you don't, you should have no difficulty following this course with sample data of your own. I got the exercise files in a folder here on my desktop. They're organized in three folders according to chapter, then there's also a folder called sample data. So not every chapter has exercise files. The folders for chapter two help you set up the advanced features in phpMyAdmin. The process is the same for every operating system that I've created separate videos for Windows and Mac OS X. If you're using Linux, you should be able to follow either set of instructions. The files in both of these folders are identical. Chapter four is where we populate a simple test database with data. The various folders contain data in a variety of formats. Micrsoft XL, CSV, OpenDocument spreadsheet, and an SQL dump file. If you watch the original version of this course and still have the up and running database, you can still use your existing data. Chapter seven deals with views and stored procedures. The exercise files in the folders 07_01 and 07_04 contain some prepared SQL queries to speed up the testing. The final folder, 07_05, contains a dump file to build a simple logging table. The course has been designed to be followed in the same order as the chapters, but if you just want to jump into the later chapters, you can create the test database by going to the sample data folder and importing this file up_and_running.sql. This creates a database called Up and Running and it's got two tables called Cars and Makes and it populates them with data. So now you know about the exercise files. Let's get on with the course.
