- Hi. I'm Rick Schmunk and I'm very happy to present to you Music Notation: The Basics. In this course, we'll start from the beginning and learn how notes and rests are written, and how cleft signs unlock the meaning of a staff. I'll show you how to understand and correctly notate key signatures in both major and minor. Next, I'll show you how to use symbols, text, and articulations to communicate dynamics, tempo, mood, and other aspects of musical expression. We'll learn how to notate form and use chord symbols and rhythmic notation to create effective rhythm section parts. And finally, we'll look at the spacing and formatting in several examples of musical parts and scores to pull together all the information we've learned and see how it's used to create effective scores and parts.
