Using the pentatonic scales to play the 8-bar blues

- All right, so now let's explore using the pentatonic scales to solo over an eight bar Blues instead of a 12 bar Blues. And you can use both major and minor, and I'm going to show you a little bit of how to use either or mix them. But first let's just isolate just the major pentatonic scale and hear how that sounds over the Blues. Check it out. (clicking) (Blues music) All right, so now let's try improvising over that same chord progression but just using the minor pentatonic scale. Here we go. (clicking) (Blues music) All right, so now for this third example, we're going to combine major and minor pentatonic scales. So that just means that we're going to switch between them. So sometimes you get that major sound that's happy, and sometimes you get the minor sound that's sad. And this rise and fall affect really gives the listeners this interesting, sort of, emotive context. So check this out, here we go. (clicking) (Blues music)
