- [Narrator] The parts for rhythm section players are often a blend of normal music and notation that is purposefully not specific. This less-defined notation informs the players of the basic information and allows them to improvise appropriate parts based upon their knowledge of style, harmony, and role or function in the rhythm section. Let's start by taking a look at Slash Notation. So this idea of Slash Notation is based upon something that's, today, referred to as Improvisatory notation. In the case of Slash Notation, it's the Least specific of this style of notation. And it consists of simply Chord symbols and Diagonal lines. Then, the musicians are expected to Create their part based upon a knowledge of Style and their Role and function. So, at its simplest level, Slash Notation would look something like this.
