- [Mike] The idea's just never stop, folks. Just as say shut the camera off, I thought of some other things that would be really cool too. Ha. So, (laughs) in an attempt to keep the idea flowing, uh, play the tune up an octave. Have you learned Turkey in the Straw up an octave? (Turkey in the Straw melody) Just by doing that, and having to not use any uh, open strings. (mandolin) It's going to automatically, you're going to start hearing things because you're going to be playing out of a closed position. (mandolin) And you're just going to naturally have a whole bunch of other ways of thinking about the mandolin up the neck. So first thing I would do is find the melody notes. (Turkey in the Straw melody) Now this riff is hard. (melodic riff) You know, so I might find a way to not even use the high E. (mandolin) I mean that's an example of, (high octave riff) instead of that. (mandolin) It still has enough of the melody to give the listener that flavor. But again, here we are up the…
