- [Narrator] The range of most instruments is small enough that the notes that the instrument is capable of playing can fit around single staff. But when notating music for instruments with wide ranges, like the piano, or sketching out an arrangement for an ensemble that has both high and low range instruments, a treble clef stave and a bass clef stave are joined together to form what's called the grand staff. Here we see a treble clef and a bass clef stacked on top of each other, and they're joined together. And, as we've talked about, the vertical arrangement is also the same as indicating higher and lower pitches. So that we know, as we go higher on either of these staffs, we're going higher in pitch, and as we go lower, we're going lower in pitch. Also, to indicate that these two staves are joined together in one part, there are two indications. First of all, over here on the left, we see this brace that joins the two staves.
