- [Instructor] Drum set parts have their own idiomatic needs and practices. As the purpose is more often to indicate ideas, rather than notate a specific part from beginning to end. This allows the drummer to customize a part to their strengths and to the performance. So, just to review, the general mapping for how we put drum set instruments on the percussion stave looks like this where we have the HiHat foot on an x note head below the staff, and then, we go through the drums written through the staff. Then, progressing to cymbals, again with x note heads on the top part of the staff or above the staff. With this notation in the X note heads, you should note that we can indicate shorter and longer values by the stem and by use of a diamond note head as we go to half note and whole note, and then some of the instruments have alternate note head when you're to articulate or play the note in a different way.
