Dotted quarter notes

Dotted quarter notes

- Lesson nine introduces the dotted quarter note. Remember a dot increases a note's duration by half. So a quarter note gets one beat, a dotted quarter note gets one and half beats and is usually followed by an eighth note. To understand how a dotted quarter note works in music, take a look at measure four of Ode to Joy. I'm going to play and count it at the same time. Notice how the dotted quarter note gets one and two and the eighth note falls on and of two. Here we go. One, two, three, four. One and two and three. Let's play Ode to Joy. One, two, three, four.
